Reaping the rewards of recycling

With the challenges facing the global refining industry, refiners should review their current practices to see how they can stay competitive and continue to thrive in today’s market. This means improving operational efficiencies and producing products at a lower cost, whilst ensuring performance and safety. Brian Visioli of Evonik explores the development of catalyst reuse and how recycled hydroprocessing catalysts can be successfully applied in tail gas treating units to deliver cost and performance gains.

ExxonMobil has awarded the contract for front-end engineering and design (FEED) of what it describes as the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen production facility. A final investment decision for the project is expected by 2024, subject to stakeholder support, regulatory permitting, and market conditions. Technip Energies will conduct the FEED for the Baytown integrated complex, which will produce up to 1 bcf/d of low carbon hydrogen, while capturing more than 98% of associated CO2 emissions, totalling around 7 million tCO2 e/year. Offtake agreements are reportedly under discussion with third party customers. Start-up is planned for 2027-2028. The carbon capture and storage network being developed for the project will also be made available for use by third-party CO2 emitters in the area in support of their decarbonisation efforts.

Chinese refinery output has been steadily falling this year as covid-related lockdowns impact upon the economy. Figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that refinery output fell to 13.8 million bbl/d in April – down 2% year on year – then took a sharp fall in May to 12.6 million bbl/d, more than 10% down on the same time in 2021, when output stood at 14.1 million bbl/d. May’s figure was 12.7 million bbl/d, a modest increase on April, but still 1.6 million bbl/d down compared to May 2021. Refining margins have also been hurt by high oil prices due to the Ukraine conflict, dropping close to zero or even negative according to industry estimates.

Haldor Topsoe and Comprimo® have announced a global strategic alliance to jointly license the TopClaus sulphur removal and recovery technology. TopClaus combines Topsoe’s energy efficient wet sulphuric acid (WSA) process with the industry-standard Claus process, enabling plant operators to handle acid gases and achieve sulphur removal efficiencies of above 99.9%. The Claus part of the unit recovers elemental sulphur from acid gases, and the tail gases from the Claus unit are then treated in the WSA unit, where the remaining sulphur compounds are converted into sulphuric acid.
